Every year, motif artisans at the Wireless Bihari Colony in Chittagong city remain busy, with working round the clock to meet the demand from boutiques and individuals ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
However, this year, artisans are passing their time idly due to a slump in work orders, triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.
Besides, the workers could not purchase enough beads, chumkis, decorative stones, and other paraphernalia, needed for their creative handiwork including beautiful Zardozi and Karchupi motifs on panjabi, sarees and salwar suits, because of the ongoing shutdown.
As a result, a small number of individuals , who are coming to artisans for placing orders, are also being turned down.
However, the artisans have some work orders from boutiques for the upcoming Eid.
This correspondent spoke to some motif artisans of Wireless Bihari Colony, whose businesses have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
With 22 motif artisans, Choice Karchupi House is the largest workshop located at the colony.
Md Jalal, proprietor of the house, said that his workshop has remained shut since April 25.
“Usually Wireless Bihari Colony remains abuzz with activities and we have our hands full before Eid. Last year, we received orders of Tk 3.5 lakh. But, this year, the orders decreased drastically,” said Jalal.
“To make ends meet, many people are switching to other professions after the coronavirus pandemic unfolded in the country. But the motif artisans cannot do so as they do not know any other work,” Jalal added.
“We are hit hard by the coronavirus. The government should give us incentives so that we can survive," said Khalid Zafar Pappu, proprietor of Pappu Boutique House.
There are some 200 motif artisans in the port city, most of whom are Urdu speaking people. Many among them have already left their traditional profession due to a slump in demand over the years, except those who are still carrying the legacy of hope for the return of golden days.
