Man beaten to death for Tk500 in Cox's Bazar

Five people have been detained over the murder

A man has reportedly been beaten to death in Cox's Bazar as he failed to pay Tk 500 as interest over a loan he took from a local moneylender.

The incident took place in Hatkhola area of Kutubdia upazila at around 11am on Monday. 

The deceased was identified as Bazal Karim, 44, son of late Chaber Ahmed from the area, according to Kutubdia police station Officer in Charge (OC) Didarul Ferdous.

Didarul said Bazal took a loan of Tk 5,000 from his neighbour Shahab Uddin on a monthly interest of Tk 500 in February. But he failed to pay Tk500, the interest for the month of April, due to the Covid-19."

On Monday, an altercation ensued between them over the issue. At one stage, Shahab Uddin, his father Motaleb and others beat Bazal with sticks, leaving him and his wife injured.

The injured were taken to the Kutubdia Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctor declared Bazal dead.

The body was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Didarul Ferdous.

The OC also added that police had arrested the key accused Shahab Uddin, his parents Motaleb and Putina Begum, his brother Alauddin and brother-in-law Fayez.
