A man has been distributing food to starving dogs on the streets of Sharsha upazila in Jessore for about a month.

Mizanur Rahman Mizan, a resident of Shyamla Gachhi village, has been feeding around 60 dogs at least once a day at market places in Sharsha Sadar, Bagachra and Navarone areas in the upazila.

Moreover, riding a motorbike, he sometimes feeds homeless persons he meets on the way.

As Mizan explained: "I have distributed masks, hand sanitizers and awareness raising leaflets during the initial period of the coronavirus outbreak. At that time I realized that homeless people and street dogs were starving. So I take around 60 packets of khichuri on my motorbike every day and I feed them. Sometimes I take the food to Jhikargacha and Chougachha upazilas."

Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Pulok Kumar Mondal said Mizan was not only known for his humanitarian work in various critical situations but was also reputed for his innovative machines. "He has been doing a very good job of providing food to dogs and homeless people everyday. We are assisting him in his work as much as he needs."

Khorshed Alam Choudhury, assistant commissioner (Land) in Sharsha upazila, said: "As the coronavirus situation won't be resolved anytime soon, we will try our best to make sure that Mizan can carry on with his program.”

Mizanur, a renowned local inventor, works at his garage in the upazila market. Although the 50-year-old has no academic certification, he has been awarded for his innovative machines at several local and national science fairs across the country. His vehicles were marketed for local use, according to earlier media reports.

His inventions include locally made vehicles, smartphone controlled irrigation pump, electricity generating treadmill and specialized fire fighting paraphernalia.
