Three people, including a member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), were injured when Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel fired rubber bullets at the Burimari-Changrabandha border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on Thursday afternoon.
BSF fired around six rubber bullets in trying to remove a mentally challenged man from the no-man's land between the two countries and push him across the border. Two locals and a BGB man were injured while trying to reach safety, according to Omar Faruk, commander of the Burimari BGB camp.
He said: “We have strongly protested today’s incident and sent a letter to BSF seeking an emergency flag meeting. The situation is currently under control and BGB personnel have been deployed at different points around the place of the incident.”
The injured, identified as BGB member Khokon Hossain, and Abdul Aziz, 50, of Tatipara, were given first aid, while Ainul Hoque, 40, of the same area, required minor surgery and had bullet splinters removed from his right arm.
Ainul Hoque told Dhaka Tribune that agitated locals had gathered around the Burimari-Changrabandha border in the afternoon when they learnt that the BSF personnel were forcibly trying to send an Indian national to Bangladesh. “When we protested, BSF personnel opened fire without warning.”
