Lower-income people in Sirajganj and Nilphamari staged demonstrations on Sunday, demanding relief aid as the nationwide shutdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus has left them jobless and hungry.
In Nilphamari, as many as 140 jobless drivers besieged the Sonarai union Parishad in Domar upazila, demanding relief aid.
Confirming the matter, Domar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahina Shabnam said: "I have ordered Union Parishad Chairman to make a list of people who are demonstrating so that we can help them out by providing relief.
In Sirajganj, locals of Dhangora Union in Raiganj upazila filed a complaint to the UNO's office as a gang of unethical Open Market Sale(OMS) dealers have embezzled rice meant for them.
The accused OMS dealers Rustom Ali, Anisur Rahman and Babu Hossain have been misappropriating rice meant for the poor for five years, alleged locals of Dhangora Union.
A group of locals named Hossain Ali, Jinnar Khatun, Rezaul and Korban Ali alleged that the accused OMS dealers took their ration cards five years ago and did not provide them with any relief yet.
Raiganj UNO Mohammad Shamimur Rahman confirmed the matter and vowed to take action against the dealers if they are found guilty.
