Around 50 hectares of farmland have been flooded with salt water after a dam broke in Kulbaria area in Dumuria upazila, Khulna.
Farmers are worried about their Irri paddy and fishes in the farming enclosures that might be harmed by salt water.
Farmer Amjad Morol said: “The dam broke all of a sudden on Thursday. Fifty hectares of farmland have been waterlogged since then.”
Animesh Aich, another farmer, said: “Farmers were hopeful about their paddy cultivation as it was about to be harvested in 10 to 15 days. But they are now extremely worried as salt water broke through the dam and flooded the lands.
Local Union Parishad Chairman Pratap Kumar Roy said he had spent around Tk1 lakh from the union parishad fund to repair the dam after it broke on Thursday. “My men and volunteers worked tirelessly and repaired the dam temporarily. But the paddy in the fields sustained a great deal of damage.”
Md Mossaddek Hossain, agricultural officer at the Department of Agricultural Extension in Dumuria upazila, said the damage would not be too much and the exact situation could be determined after a few weeks.
