Bogra SI closed for harassing, detaining journalists

At some point of the dispute, SI Niranjan verbally harassed them and forcefully took them to the police station with handcuffs on

A policeman has been closed and attached to the district police lines for illegally detaining and harassing two journalists in Bogra.

The accused, Niranjan, a Sub-inspector (SI) of Sadar police station of the district reportedly made offensive remarks to the journalists and later forcefully took them to the police station with handcuffs on, the victims alleged.

The detainees Shahjahan Ali Babu, and Mazed Rahman, district correspondents of Ekattor Television and Somoy Television were going towards Chelopara on a motorcycle. The police officer made them stop at the spot for unknown reasons, and detained them misusing his power, the journalists alleged.

At some point of the dispute, SI Niranjan verbally harassed them and forcefully took them to the police station with handcuffs on, said Shahjahan and Majed.

Upon learning about the incident, their fellow journalists went to the police station and protested against the incident. After their request and complaint, Superintendent of Police, Ali Ashraf Bhuiya, directed to release the two journalists and Niranjan was closed and attached to the police lines, said Inspector Rezaul Karim, of the police station.

“The incident sparked from a minor reason. We will investigate the matter and take action accordingly,” the inspector said.

Meanwhile, journalist Mazed Rahman said: “We will not tolerate such misuse of power. We will file a case against the policeman and his associates.”

He also accused an Assistant Sub Inspector named Goulam Mostafa who assisted the former in the illegal detention.
