It comes after two patients at the hospital’s isolation unit test positive

Update : 12 Apr 2020, 11:48 PM

Authorities in Barisal has put the southern district under lockdown in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus.

“The entire district will remain locked down until further notice,” Deputy Commissioner M Ajiar Rahman told Dhaka Tribune on Sunday.

No one will be allowed to enter or leave the district by any means of transportation, he added.

However, those involved with emergency services, like fire service, medicine, agricultural supplies, media and import-export duty among others and the vehicles carrying them, will remain out of the purview of the lockdown.

The move came hours after two patients at the isolation unit of Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital were found to be Covid-19 positive.

The tests were conducted at the hospital’s newly-opened Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) laboratory.

As of Sunday, Bangladesh has confirmed 621 coronavirus cases with the death toll rising to 34 after four new fatalities were reported.

The fast-spreading Covid-19 has so far, killed 109,000 people in more than 200 countries and territories.
