A mobile court detained three members of Sonamukhi union parishad for their involvement in irregularities over the distribution of rice at a fair price in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj.
The accused identified as Saravanu Khatun, Amir Hossain, and Asadul Islam, were detained on Tuesday afternoon.
Later, they were questioned at the office of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahid Hasan Siddique.
UNO Jahid Hasan said: “The trio were detained over irregularities with the issue of cards to the poor people for the distribution of rice at a fair price. They will be questioned to determine if others were involved as well.”
Meanwhile, over 4,000kg of rice intended for VGF, OMS, and other government relief projects were seized in Naogaon, Joypurhat, and Jessore.
In Jessore, police led by the upazila nirbahi office seized 80 sacks (4,000kg) of rice belonging to government relief projects were seized while two men were arrested in Sadar upazila on Tuesday.
The arrestees were identified as Rakib Hasan Shaon, 32, and Hasibul Hasan, 35, said Jessore Detective Branch (DB) of Police OC Maruf Ahmed.
He said: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive at a warehouse and seized a large quantity of rice intended for poor families. The duo detained have more rice stored illegally, we are questioning them over the location.”
In Joypurhat, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained two men and seized seven sacks of rice belonging to the Open Market Sale (OMS) program in Gopinathpur of Akkelpur upazila on Tuesday.
The detainees were identified as Abu Sayeed, and his brother-in-law Anwar Hossain of Harisara village, said Joypurhat RAB 5 Camp Cdr Add SP Mohaimenur Rahman.
He said: “The duo were arrested for illegal selling and supply of OMS rice. They have confessed to their crime and were sued with the Akkelpur police station.”
In Naogaon, upazila administration detained a man with 14 sacks of rice belonging to the Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) project in Badalgachhi upazila on Monday night.
The detainee identified as Sohel Rana, a local grocery shop owner, was in line to face the legal repercussion of his actions, said Assistant Commissioner (Land) Naharul Islam.
He said: “Based on a tip-off, we raided Sohel’s house and seized 14 sacks (each weighing 30kg) of VGD rice from his possession. He was immediately detained for illegally possessing government relief materials.”
