At least 50 people were injured in a clash between two groups of locals in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria, amid the countrywide shutdown to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

The incident took place in Bhuishar village under Pakshimul Union around 10am Tuesday and carried on till 2pm with brief intervals in between.

The injured were sent to Sarail Upazila Health Complex, Brahmanbaria Generals Hospital, and other private hospitals for treatment.

Sarail police station Inspector (Investigation) Md Nurul Hoq said police fired 26 rounds of rubber bullets and 10 rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the mob.

"The situation has been brought under control and additional policemen have been deployed in the area," he added.

Pakshimul Union Parishad Member Malai Miya said the clash broke out between locals from Uttarpara and Patarhati as one Asad Ullah did not take responsibility for the dirty water leaking from his bathroom and flooding the nearby road and lands, inconveniencing locals.

“When I went to complain Shahab’s son Asad Ullah told me off,” he said.

In this regard, Asad Ullah said he had not been rude to Malai Miya. “I simply said it wasn’t dirty water, it was just water going through a drain and wasn’t affecting the road.”
