Police on Thursday night arrested a madrasa student for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a teenage girl in Parabhorot village of Gafargaon upazila in Mymensingh.

The arrested Mahfuz, aka Ichhamuddin, 18, and the other absconding suspects—Ashiqul Hoque, and Md Arif—are students of Jamia Kasemul Ulum Qawmi Madrasa.

The victim Takmin, 16, was found hanging from a tree near Athardana Jame Mosque on Tuesday morning, by locals who were returning home after Fajr prayer.

Later in the day, the girl’s father filed a murder case with local police station.

According to the girl’s family, she was insisting on marrying one Ashiqul Hoque as they were in a relationship. On Tuesday morning, Ashiqul asked her to meet so they could get married. When she arrived, he took her to an isolated place and raped her there. Later, he killed her with assistance from Mahfuz and Arif.

Khahe Ali Mondal, a local, said: “Ashiqul called for the Fajr prayer as the muazzin at Athardana Jame Mosque, and was our imam Tuesday morning. Mahfuz and Arif were also seen attending the prayer. Ashiqul has been missing since Wednesday.”

A special team of Mymensingh Criminal Investigation Department discovered a phone near the girl’s body, which contains record of her last calls.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ali Haider Choudhury said the case is under investigation and they are trying to arrest the other suspects.
