A man, who had come in contact with a confirmed coronavirus patient, died in Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) on Thursday while undergoing treatment in the hospital’s surgery ward.
The deceased was Mostahidur Rahman, 45, from Khulna’s Helatola area.
A medical team from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) went Khulna to collect samples from the deceased’s body.
Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr Sujat Ahmed said: “The medical team will test if the deceased had coronavirus. Mostahidur’s body will be kept in the morgue of KMCH until we get the test results. We will take further actions based on the report.”
KMCH Director Dr ATM Monjur Morshed said: “Mostahidur was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Dhaka for his thyroid surgery. One of the coronavirus patients, who died later, was also getting treated in the hospital’s ICU unit.”
Later hospital authority released all of their patients and advised them to self-quarantine but Mostahidur went to KMCH on Wednesday night and got admitted without disclosing any of these details, the KMCH director said.
On Thursday morning, Mostahidur said he was experiencing breathing problems and that is when the hospital authority learned everything, he added.
Mostahidur was promptly moved to an empty ward, where he died at around 1:30 pm.
Everyone who was involved in treating Mostahidur, including two doctors and 10 nurses, are now quarantined in separate rooms of the hospital dormitory, Dr Morshed said.
KMCH corona unit In-Charge Dr Shoilendranath Bishwash said: “The deceased would have been treated in the corona unit if he properly disclosed information during admission. Now, because of him, 30% of the patients are leaving the hospital.”
