Update : 25 Mar 2020, 08:47 PM

Local authorities have put Bailjuri village of Ghior upazila under lockdown as a preventive measure against the spread of coronavirus.

Ghior Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Irene Akhter made the announcement on Wednesday. She also sent 26 residents from six houses to home quarantine until further notice, reports UNB.

The announcement follows the death of an elderly man with symptoms of COVID-19.

The man, named Alamgir Hossain, was a cashier at Metropolitan Hospital in Dhaka and a resident of the village, said Akhter. Hossain had been suffering from asthma and fever since the previous week, and doctors asked him to go into home quarantine.

When his condition worsened on Tuesday night, he was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, but he died on the way.

Following his death, panic over coronavirus spread quickly among the villagers. Local authorities reacted by declaring that the village was under lockdown.

As of Wednesday, coronavirus has killed 5 people and infected another 39 across Bangladesh.
