Brahmanbaria’s highest ranking health officer has disregarded the government’s directive to boycott all public gathering and held his daughter’s wedding celebration in full swing.

The wedding took place at government officers’ dormitory adjacent to Faruki Park in the city on Friday.

A number of doctors from across the district attended the wedding. The event was attended by at least 250 people, according to local sources.

However, the Civil Surgeon Dr Shah Alam claimed the ceremony was a simple one and did not see much of a gathering.

He told Dhaka Tribune that his daughter’s wedding had been scheduled a month ago and so he could not have stopped the event. “I have many close family relatives but I’ve only invited a few of them. I wasn’t able to invite many guests and other eminent personalities.”

Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Daula Khan said: “The law is applicable for everyone equally. If the civil surgeon had indeed organized a public gathering, his superiors will surely take action against him. The government has directed everyone to avoid public gatherings to stop the spread of coronavirus. We will surely investigate the matter.”

As means to preventing the spread of coronavirus, local administrations have started imposing lockdowns and bans on all type public gatherings.

As a result, multiple weddings were shut down by mobile courts in Chandpur, Moulvibazar, Comilla, Bhola, Narayanganj, Shariatpur, and Habiganj in the last two days.

Mobile courts also slapped hefty fines for organizing such an event violating public health directives.
