5 children die of measles in Rangamati

Civil Surgeon Bipash Khisha said another 98 have also been infected

Five children have died from measles and 98 others have been infected in separate remote villages in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati.

Civil Surgeon Bipash Khisha confirmed the matter on Friday.

Two one-year-old children and another, aged one month, died on March 15, 16 and 17, respectively, he said, with two dying in the last week of February.

Residents, mostly children, of Arunpara, Natunpara, and Luingkhiang villages under Ward 7 of Sajek union, have been infected with the disease, the civil surgeon said.

A five-member medical team from the district health department is working there, Khisha said.

"The situation is under control," he added.

On the other hand, Sajek union parishad Ward 7 member Hirananda Tripura said a number of 107 people have been infected with the disease in the three villages in the last two weeks.

The villages, situated 50 to 60km apart, from Sajek union, have little access to proper healthcare system.

A team from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is now working at the spot, Hirananda added.
