Shibchar put on emergency lockdown

The lockdown has been put into effect from Thursday evening

Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district has been put on emergency lockdown to try to stop the spread of coronavirus. 

“During the lockdown, no one can enter the area and no one can leave. Everyone has to stay at home. Only emergency services will remain active,” said Shibchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Asaduzzaman at an emergency press conference Thursday afternoon. 

He said: "All shops and public transport will remain closed. Only pharmacies, raw material stores, grocery stores, and emergency services will remain open." 

The lockdown has been put into effect from Thursday evening.

Upazila Chairman Shamsuddin Khan, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Shibchar Circle) Abir Mahmud, and Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Shashanka Chandra Ghosh, were also present during the announcement. 

Dr Shashank Chandra Ghosh said there were 220 people in home-quarantine, one in hospital quarantine, and four in isolation in the district. In addition, 136 people were released from home-quarantine.

Earlier in the day, Health Minister Zahid Malek, at a press conference, said some areas of the country may put on emergency lockdown.
