Police have arrested a fugitive and drug-addicted son after almost 14 months. He murdered his mother only for Tk200.
Accused Rasel, 27, was arrested at Shah Sultan Shrine at Modonpur in Sadar upaizla of Netrokona district on Tuesday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Pallabi Zone) Firoz Kawser disclosed the news to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.
Rasel confessed to committing the crime, saying that he felt no regret at the time, said AC Firoz, who added that Rasel had been leading a fugitive’s life by taking shelter at various shrines in Mymensingh, Netrokona, Kushtia and Sylhet districts for these 14 months.
Kajal Rekha and Abdur Rahman had been living a happy life with their two children. Despite their financial crises, the family led a good life until their son Rasel got addicted to drugs and marijuana.
The couple tried their best to bring their son back on the right path. They also sent him to a correction centre but in vain.
Every day, Rasel used to demand and extort money for buying drugs. He also engaged in vandalism at home and frequently engaged in quarrels with family members over the issue, the police official said.
Finally on January, 3 in 2019, he killed his mother Kajal Rekha, 48, by attacking her with a crowbar in the presence of his younger sister as she refused to give him Tk200 for drugs. He fled the scene after the murder, police said.
A murder case was filed against Rasel with Pallabi Police Station the next day, he said.
Later, Rasel took shelter in different shrines in various districts. He grew his hair long and sported a beard so that he could not be identified. However, police were able to apprehend him after around one year.
“We were searching for him for the last one year. Later, we came to know of his whereabouts on the basis of secret information. On Tuesday we conducted a raid at Shah Sultan Shrine in Modonpur of Netrokona district and arrested him. At first his family members could not identify Rasel because of his long hair and beard. However, Rasel himself confessed to his guilt,” Firoz Kawser said.
During his fugitive life, Rasel used to manage money for buying drugs by mugging and theft. He was also beaten up by mobs several times, Firoz added.
There are multiple cases of theft and drug abuse against him with different police stations in Dhaka. Rasel agreed to make a confessional statement in court, he added.
“We will send him to jail through the court,” Firoz said.
