In a tragic turn of events, five passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw have died and two others injured after a roadside tree fell on them while workers were cutting it in Dhaka's Dhamrai upazila.
The incident took place on Kawalipara-Balia road near Madarpur area on Monday noon.
The deceased identified as Nuru, 65, Shamsul,70, Mazeda,65, Ayesha, 60, and Shefali Khatun,62, were from the upazila, said Dhamrai police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dipok Chandra Saha.
Dipok said: "The four elderly people were returning home from Balia Union Parishad(UP) on an auto-rickshaw after withdrawing their old-age allowance money. At one point, a road side tree fell on the vehicle while workers were cutting it in the area, injuring seven passengers on the spot."
Later, the injured were rushed to Kawalipara hospital where on-duty doctors declared five of them dead, he added.
