Outrage after father, son killed in Khagrachhari

Update : 12 May 2017, 10:08 PM
A man and his son – both ruling party leaders – have been killed allegedly by rivals in Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila. The deceased are former president of Khagrachhari Union Krishak League Chiranjoy Tripura, 60, and his son Karna Bikash Tripura, 35. Karna was a member of the district unit Chhatra League. Chiranjoy’s wife Bhablakshi Tripura and Karna’s wife Bijli Tripura were also critically injured during the attack carried out with firearms and sharp weapons around 9pm on Thursday, Superintendent of Police Ali Ahmed Khan said. Karna was killed on the spot while the others were rushed to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital where Chiranjoy succumbed to his injuries. He claimed that Khagrachhari Sadar Union Parishad’s Ward 5 Member Kalibandhu Tripura had directed his son and associates to carry out an attack. “Land dispute and establishing supremacy in the area could be behind the killing.” “The bodies will be handed over to the family after an autopsy,” the SP said. Meanwhile, a faction of Khagrachhari district unit Awami League brought out a protest procession yesterday morning protesting the killings. Education and Human Resource Affairs Secretary Md Didarul Alam led the procession. He blamed the other fraction, led by district unit President Kujendra Lal Tripura, for the attack, and demanded arrest of the killers and masterminds. When contacted, Kujendra Lal Tripura refuted the allegations against him. “The killers are not my party supporters,” he said, urging the law enforcers to arrest the killers and bring them to book.
