Two men were killed in separate gunfights in Kushtia and Noakhali early on Tuesday.

In Noakhali, an accused in the murder of a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader, named Rakib Hossain, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Amanullahpur village in Begumganj upazila.

The deceased, Nazrul Islam alias Kana Nazrul, 26, was from Abhirampur village and was the second-in-command of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Pias Bahini.

Narrating the event, Begumganj police station OC Harun-ur-Rashid Chowdhury said policemen from the station along with detectives conducted a drive in Jonokallyan High School upon receiving a tip-off that members of Pias Bahini were there.

The OC said the members of Pias Bahini, upon realizing that law enforcement members were in the vicinity, opened fire at the policemen, triggering a gunfight.

Nazrul was shot during the skirmish and was arrested from the spot. Police took him to Noakhali General Hospital, where the doctors on duty pronounced him dead, the OC added.

A foreign-made pistol, sharp weapons, and five empty cartridges were recovered from the spot.

There were several cases against Nazrul including Rakib murder, the police officer said.

When contacted by Dhaka Tribune, Nazrul’s uncle Mohammad Ullah, a former union parishad member, declined to comment on the incident.

Previously on Sunday, Shibir activists attacked Chhatra League leaders in Amanullahpur Bazar area, leaving Rakib and four others severely injured.

Rakib died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday. His mother Shirin Akhter filed a case with Begumganj police station against 25 people.

Police arrested four Shibir activists and produced them before court on Monday, the OC said, adding that they are working to arrest the other accused.

In Kushtia, a man was killed in an alleged gunfight with police at Golapnagar Monipark in Bheramara upazila.

The deceased was Mohon Ali, 35, from Doulatkhali village in Daulatpur upazila.
