Road crashes claim 10 lives across country

One of the accidents left teachers and students of Islamic University injured

At least 10 people were killed and around 79 others injured in road accidents in Gopalganj, Rangamati, Jamalpur, Comilla and Kushtia yesterday.

In Gopalganj, five construction workers were killed and seven others injured after a bus of Falguni Paribahan hit a three-wheeler on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Pona area of Kashiani upazila.

The deceased are Bodir Molla, 24, Sumon Munshi, 20, Mizan Fokir, 40, Sirajul Islam Molla, 30, and Sujon Molla, 30. All were from Tita village of the upazila, confirmed Resident Medical Officer Dr Md Iqbal Khan of Kashiani Upazila Health Complex. 

In Rangamati, an unidentified bus driver's assistant was killed and 25 others were injured when their vehicle overturned in Sapchori area, said Kotwali police station OC Nurul Islam.

The injured were admitted to Rangamati General Hospital, he added.

In Jamalpur, two motorcyclists were killed in separate road accidents in Bokshiganj and Islampur upazila.

The deceased were identified as Rafiq Miah, 22, and Delu Miah, 35.

Rafiq Miah was killed on the spot and another seriously injured as his motorbike collided head-on with a truck in the Bokshiganj upazila of Shurjanagar village, said Bokshiganj police station OC Hazrat Ali.

Delu Miah was in a head-on collision between a motorbike and a bicycle, which left four people severely injured, on the Islampur-Dewanganj Highway in Mosharofganj of in Islampur upazila.

The bicycle rider Delu Miah was pronounced dead after he was taken to a local hospital, said Islampur police station OC Abdullah AL Mamun.

In Comilla, a man was killed and four others were injured when an auto-rickshaw was rammed by a bus on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Burichang upazila.

The deceased was identified as Sujon. Moinamoti highway police station OC Alamgir Hossain said three-wheelers are not allowed to ply on the road, which is one of the reasons for the occurrence of such accidents.

In Brahmanbaria, a  middle-aged man was killed when a truck hit his motorbike on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at Sohagpur area of Ashuganj upazila.

The identity of the deceased could not be immediately confirmed, said Khatihata highway police station OC Md Mainul Islam.

In Kushtia, 40 people, including 37 students and two teachers of Islamic University (IU), were injured when their vehicle crushed into a roadside tree at Bittipara area in Sadar upazila in the afternoon.

Islamic University police station OC Jahangir Arif said the bus was heading towards the university from Naogaon, reports UNB.

Twelve of the injured, including the bus driver, were sent to Kushtia General Hospital while the others were taken to the University Medical Centre.
