Safina Lohani, a woman who had dedicated her life working for the welfare of Birangonas (heroines of the Liberation War of 1971), died Monday night at her own residence in Sirajganj's SS road.
Safina, also known as the mother of Birangonas, was 67 at the time of her death. She leaves behind her husband, son, daughter, and a number of well-wishers to mourn her death.
She was bedridden for some time as she was suffering from several complex diseases.
Her body was buried at the Malshapara graveyard after a namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) on Tuesday afternoon.
Safina was born on September 1, 1953 in Sonatala village under Sirajganj's Ullapara upazila.
She took part in the Liberation War and assisted the freedom fighters, even though she had a two-month-old baby then.
Responding to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's call, Safina, under the leadership of Dr Nilima Ibrahim, established a rehabilitation centre for the women who were abused during the war.
Safina was also an active member of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, a forum campaigning for trials of the war criminals of 1971.
Numerous people, including Sirajganj-1 constituency representative Mohammed Nasim MP, mourned Safina's death.
