The medical centre at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) has almost ceased to function, as both of its doctor's resigned a month ago.
Around 200 people including teachers, students, and other university staff members would regularly visit the medical centre for primary diagnosis and treatment when it had doctors.
Now, the two-bed medical centre has only two nurses and none of the 12,000 students, 300 teachers, and 600 employees of the university visit the medical.
Asking to remain anonymous, some students said they often did not receive the necessary treatment even when there were doctors at the medical centre and patients would oftentimes be recommended to the Gopalganj General Hospital. But, they at least, did get primary treatments when there were doctors.
Several university staff say the authorities care very little about the lack of manpower, adequate space and essential equipments required at the medical centre.
Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Shahjahan said: "Being an acting vice chancellor, I am not at liberty to appoint new doctors at the medical centre. I am, however, trying to hire one temp doctor on contract, so that the medical centre may at least provide some treatments."
