Lalmonirhat Nursing College, connected to the 100-bed Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital, is set to begin its academic activities in January 2020 after being left abandoned since its construction in 2014.

The hostel is capable of accommodating over 350 female students in two five-storey buildings.

According to the college sources, five years after the residential nursing college was established, the authorities hired a principal and two lecturers on January 29, 2019.

Lalmonirhat MP Motahar Hossain said: “We repeatedly pursued the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to begin the academic program of the college since its construction, but because of negligence on their part, the preparation works had been delayed.”

Upon visiting the nursing college, this correspondent found that since it was built five years ago, the campus and its buildings have not been cleaned or maintained for new students.

Saheba Begum, principal of the nursing college said: “Since I joined, I have urged the higher authorities to complete the unfinished boundary walls on the western side, build a road in front of the front gate, and to hire more people.

“Government work has rules to follow which delayed the institution to begin operating. We will get more people as soon as classes begin. The authorities ensured me that other work essential for academic activities will soon begin.”

Khairul Islam, coordinator of the Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery, said: “More people will soon be hired for the institution. We have already released the admission circular.”

Lecturer Yusuf Ali of the college, said: “Every year, starting this January, we will take 30 students for Diploma in Midwifery, 50 students for Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery, and 50 more for BSc in Nursing. There will be five male students each in the nursing diploma and BSc degree programs respectively.

“We have a single floor residential building for the principal, a three storey building for the teachers, two, three-storey buildings for other college staff, and two five storey buildings for the female students.

“Apart from this, the college has a three-storey and two-storey academic building, where things need to be fixed, as they have been left unused for years,” added Yusuf.
