At least five people died due to cold-related illness in Moulvibazar district on Friday and Saturday.
The deceased Buleshwari Tulia, 60, Hariya Bin, 60, and Anjab Ali, 65 died Saturday morning, and Rakhal Chasha, 46, Dangama Kurmi, 60, died on Friday afternoon.
All of the deceased were residents of Kamolganj upazila of the district.
Confirming the deaths , Shitaram Bin, a member of Shamshernagar union parishad, said: "Most of the people who died during the cold are poor tea farmers, who could not manage warm clothes for themselves."
Dr Bishwajit Singh of Kamolganj Upazila Health Complex, said: " Two kids are admitted in our hospital due to cold related illnesses this year, however I don't know any other occurrences of death due to such illness."
Kamolganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ashequl Haque on Saturday, said: "I have heard that five people died in the last two days. The upazila administration are distributing warm clothes and the rate of distribution will increase."
On a visit to different places in the district this correspondent found low income people are struggling in cold weather and started fires to keep themselves warm.
The lowest temperature was recorded at 11.1 degrees Celsius until Saturday evening and 14.2 degrees Celsius until Sunday afternoon.
