A gang of unknown miscreants on Tuesday attacked a mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and ransacked wreaths placed at the base of the mural to honour the Father of the Nation on Victory Day in Rangpur.
This heinous incident took place in the vicinity of the Deputy Commissioner's residence.
Rangpur Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rashid confirmed the matter, saying police are conducting drives to detain the criminals.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Rangpur town Awami league unit and district unit Awami League blocked roads near the area and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.
Tushar Kanti Mondol, general secretary of the city’s Awami League unit said miscreants dishonoured the Father of the Nation by ransacking the wreaths placed under the pedestal of the mural, adding: " We will continue the road blockade if the criminals are not detained within 48 hours."
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Abdul Alim Mahmud said: " Several police teams are working to track down the miscreants."
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Asib Ahasan, terming the incident shameful, vowed to take stern action against the culprits.
