At least seven people have been injured in an attack allegedly led by associates of a Bhola Awami League leader over establishing supremacy at Jamir Shah Market in Hindu-inhabited Kolatali Char area of Monpura upazila in Bhola.
According to witnesses, a gang comprising seven to eight thugs, led by Monpura Union Parishad Chairman Md Aman Ullah’s close aide Md Sumon, picked up Sreeman Chandra Das, an assistant to crab trader Sanker Babu.
When members of the market management committee went to rescue Sreeman, they swooped on the traders and attacked them indiscriminately, leaving around seven of them injured.
Of the injured, Lokkhon Chandra Das, 45, Alongho Kumar Das,65, and Dipak Chandra Das, 40, all members of the committee, were rushed to a local hospital.
Only those who are loyal to the chairman could run their businesses in the market, and others will not be allowed there, the witnesses quoted them as saying.
“The attackers stormed my shop and looted commodities worth over Tk1 lakh,” the committee’s secretary Alongho Kumar alleged.
Aman Ullah, also a joint sectary of Monpura union Awami League, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
None has been arrested yet in connection with the incident, Md Abu Sayeed, sub-inspector of Kolatali police investigation centre, said.
“We are looking into the matter,” he added.
