After an 18-day long battle for life, a teenage girl died on Friday morning, reportedly being forced to swallow insecticide by her in-laws.

The deceased Meghla Roy, 17, was a resident of Ramdebpur village in Chrirbandar upazila of Dinajpur.

Profullo Roy and Bashonti Roy, in-laws of the deceased, were arrested after Meghla's father Gajon Roy filed a case against them and the husband Litu Roy, said Chirirbandar police station OC Mozaffor Hossain.

Law enforcers are trying to arrest the absconding Litu, added OC Mozaffor.

Meghla died under treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital. Gajon Roy said he could not afford to treat her in a Dhaka hospital as referred by a doctor in Rangur Medical College Hospital.

Dr Susen Chandra Roy, in-charge of the ICU said: “The poison present in her is fatal for humans. The insecticide is illegal in India, but is often sold in the rural areas here.”

According to the case details, Meghla’s father was not able to pay a dowry of Tk2 lakh during her wedding, as demanded by Litu and his parents. Even after a point, when Gajon managed to pay Tk25,000 in dowry, Meghla was tortured and was ultimately force fed insecticide.
