Update : 28 Nov 2019, 04:07 AM

Intern doctors of Rangpur Medical College Hospital called an indefinite strike on Wednesday, protesting several incidents of verbal and physical assault directed at them by nurses.

This unannounced protest has caused immense suffering to patients at the hospital.

In the morning, intern doctors demonstrated with a human chain in front of the hospital and the Civil Surgeon’s Office in support of their strike.

According to the protesters, on Monday night there was commotion and conflict between the duty doctor and nurses in Ward 27. On Tuesday morning, nurses physically assaulted Dr Arif, an intern doctor.

“We didn't get a solution after filing a written complaint, so now we are forced to call this strike,” the protesters said.

The protest will continue until their demands are met, they added.

A small number of the intern doctors went to their duties in the afternoon, following assurances of redressal from the authorities.

On the other hand, Nurses Association leader Mahmuda Akhter accused intern doctorArif of assaulting a nurse on the Monday night shift.

She said the intern doctors are protesting only to cover up the real issue.

Acting Director Dr Sahadat Hossain of Rangpur Medical College Hospital said hospital authorities are investigating the Monday night incident.
