Unidentified miscreants vandalized sculptures of freedom fighters including a sculpture of Bangabandhu, and three freedom fighters in the Shaitpakia area of Jhalakathi’s Nalchity Upazila Saturday night.

The sculptures were thrown into a nearby canal after being desecrated.

Demanding a proper investigation on behalf of the freedom fighters, former deputy commander of Jhalakathi Muktijoddha Sangsad, journalist Dulal Saha said such activities will soon be punished after discussing with other freedom fighters.

Nalchity police station Officer-in-Charge Sakhawat Hossain said police recovered the desecrated sculptures from the canal after being informed about the incident.

Legal steps will be taken against the miscreants, he also said.

According to the locals and the police, local freedom fighter Mofiz Uddin Haoladar built the liberation war sculpture on the entrance of Nalchity Upazila in 2017 to commemorate the frontal war which occurred at Jhalakathi’s Chachoir village in 1971.
