Garments workers from different places of the country assembled on Sunday to form a human chain, demanding safer workplaces and proper fulfillment of their rights.
Labour leaders put forth their demands under the banner “Bangladesh Srom Odhikar Forum” while commemorating the memory of the Tazreen Fashions Limited tragedy, which took place seven years ago.

But it is a matter of regret that the state had failed to address the rights of the workers.”

Echoing his sentiments, Ready-made Garments Workers’ Federation President Lavlee Yasmin said: “The government still has not paid compensation to the families of the workers who died in the Tazreen incident. Even the injured workers in the incident have not been paid for proper treatment.

“Besides, proper compensation and means of rehabilitation should be set up immediately for the families of the workers, and labour protection funds should be set up immediately to ensure a safe workplace and assured livelihood,” she added.
Farmer leader Badrul Alam and Jago Bangladesh Garments Sramik Federation President Bahrane Sultan Bahar also spoke at the human chain, among others.
On November 24, 2012, a massive fire broke out at the Tazreen Fashions Limited garment factory in Ashulia on the outskirts of Dhaka due to a short circuit. At least 112 people died in the fire, and over 200 were injured.
