Around 200 performing artists from home and abroad are taking part in "Ocean Dance Festival 2019," the largest international dance festival of its kind in Bangladesh, that kicked off on Friday in the coastal resort town of Cox's Bazar.

The four day long dance extravaganza by the seaside comprises of seminars, workshops, and live performances, and is organized by World Dance Alliance, Nrityajog (World Dance Alliance – Asia Pacific Bangladesh chapter) in association with Bangladesh Tourism Board, the University of Chittagong, and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh.

National and international performing artists have gathered in the tourist town to showcase classical dance, contemporary dance, folk dance, and dance drama at the festival.

With a theme of "Durotter Shetubandhan" (Bridging the distance), the festival hopes to achieve and create a platform to introduce a wealth of Bangladeshi dance genres to the world community.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Director General Liakat Ali Lucky, and Nrityajog General Secretary Lubna Mariam, attended the event yesterday on the second day of the festival.

Officials and representatives of host organizations said the second day of the festival began with Yoga on the beach front.  Seminars, lectures, dance demonstrations, studio performances, and digital screenings were held at the Mermaid Resort.

Participants from 15 countries presented various topics pertaining to culture and dance at the sessions.

In a paper, World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific President Urmimala Sarker said there is a lack of research or information on dance in the Indian sub-continent for use as reference for research and learning.

“People from other disciplines should also come forward in discovering the sector. Our education system has been developed in such a way that students in general cannot ask questions of teachers, while education continues underpinned by the capacity of memorizing,” she said.

She called upon people to raise issues of common concern in diverse ways to help others understand things easily.

The event will conclude on November 25.
