A teacher of Jhenaidah Government High School has been warned for beating up an eighth grader with a steel pipe as the latter came to school without uniform.
Sadman Saif Shoron had taken leave for Sunday in advance, but went to school only to submit some documents. “So he did not wear uniform that day,” his mother Shaheda Khatun told the Dhaka Tribune.
“Assistant Teacher Kamal Hossain was angry seeing him. He called my son to his office and thrashed him with a steel pipe. He bears injury marks all over the body,” she said, adding that Shoron had been given treatment at home.
The same day, the headmaster spoke to Shoron’s parents and the teacher, accused of corporal punishment – an act declared unlawful by the apex court of the country. Kamal was warned of action if he repeated the same offence in future.
Later the guardians submitted written complaints to the headmaster, and different government offices concerned demanding punishment of the teacher.
Kamal admitted that he had beaten up the boy, but claimed: “The matter has been settled.”
When contacted, Headmaster Sunil Kumar Adhikari said that they would take due action against the teacher after an investigation.
