Update : 25 Apr 2017, 01:02 AM
Several hundred families in two villages of Kamalganj upazila in Moulvibazar district have been marooned and 500 hectare crop lands damaged as flash flood is sweeping over the area for the third time. Water of the Dholai River has made a fresh leap amid the incessant rainfall over the last couple of days, flooding the entire vicinity of Gopalnagar and Basudebpur through three breaches on the river protection embankment, according to locals. Ahidul Islam, a farmer from Gopalnagar, said all the paddy fields and vegetables gardens in his village were damaged by the flood. The crisis of cattle feed had also reemerged, he added. Kamalganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Mohammad Shamsuddin Ahmad told the Dhaka Tribune that around 350 hectare of paddy fields, 50 hectare of vegetables gardens and some paddy seedbeds prepared for the oncoming Aus season (March-June) cultivation had been inundated. Kamalganj Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mohammad Asaduzzaman said so far around 1,400 families in 35 villages had been affected by the three spells of flash flood in the area. Twenty tonnes of rice have been allocated as relief to those families, he added.
