Pranesh Biswas, a jute grower from Jamalpur of Baliakandi, told the Dhaka Tribune: “All the jute fields in the low-lying areas of Hatimohon Beel have been flooded in the rainfall. All the jute plants will rot.
“The plants grown in comparatively higher plots may survive.”
About 50,000 hectares of land were brought under jute cultivation in Rajbari this year.
Johor Ali Sheikh, another flood-affected jute grower from Rajbari Sadar, said that the damages could have been reduced had the water be drained out from the fields through the canals. But it is not happening.
Deputy Director of the district’s Department of Agricultural Extension Nibas Debnath said that they had been observing the overall flood situation in the district and would inform the higher authorities about the matter.Most of the jute fields in Sadar and Baliakandi upazilas of Rajbari district have been flooded following last few days' heavy rainfall.
Jute growers fear huge losses as the stagnated water has been showing no sign of receding, our correspondent reported.
