At least 10 people were injured after a clash erupted between police, and agitated garments workers in Gazipur.
The incident occurred around 3pm on Thursday at Sreepur’s Mawna area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
Earlier in the morning, workers of Adib Dyeing Mills Limited came down onto the streets protesting nonpayment of their dues for the month of August, and September.
The agitated workers said, at one point police asked them to end the protests, and that led to an altercation between police, and the workers.
Later, police baton charged, and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the crowd, while workers threw brickbats at them.
There was also chase, and counter-chase between the two sides during the clash.
The workers claim that 10 of their colleagues were injured during the clash.
Meanwhile, Gazipur Industrial Police (North) officer-in-charge Chandan Kumar Chakraborti said: “The workers had blocked the highway causing public suffering. When we asked them to leave the highway, they started throwing brickbats at us. Later, we used 10 teargas shells to disperse the crowd.”
He, however, denied the report of workers being injured in the clash.
