The police have unearthed a new route for smuggling yaba tablets after arresting a covered van driver from Pahartali area in Chattogram early Saturday.
The arrested, identified as Joynal Abedin, 48, a native of Benapole, drives a covered van on Chittagong-Jessore route.
According to the police, the yaba pills are first procured from Chittagong. Then the yaba tablets are shipped to Benapole border through covered vans, and later smuggled to India.
How was the new route discovered?
Previously on August 29, a sack of yaba tablets were dumped from Dewanhat flyover in the city. Later, the police recovered 40,000 pieces of yaba tablets from the bag.
A case was lodged with Double-Mooring police station accusing some unnamed persons in connection with the yaba seizure.
The police unearthed the new yaba route while investigating this case.
As part of the investigation, the police examined the CCTV footage, and discovered that the yaba bag was dumped from a covered van.
Sadip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Double-Mooring police station said that they arrested the driver along with the covered van from Pahartali Green View Residential Area.
During primary interrogation, the covered van driver told the police about the new route for smuggling yaba tablets. On Saturday, the driver also gave a deposition to the court in this regard.
The driver told the police that he transported three consignments of yaba tablets to Benapole border with the covered van in the last few months.
On August 29, he was shipping yaba tablets from the city’s Madarbari area to Benapole. However, a microbus signaled the covered van to stop. He suspected that there were law enforcers inside the microbus. To avoid being caught with the yaba tablets, he dumped the sack full of yaba tablets.
The driver said that Hazrat Ali, owner of the covered van, gave him Tk 20,000 for transporting each of the yaba consignments. The yaba tablets are then delivered to Jalal Uddin at Benapole border.
