Police arrested a marriage registrar for allegedly conducting the marriage of a rape survivor to her rapist in the Sadar upazila of Lalmonirhat.
The suspect Shaidul Islam, 48, was arrested from the Buzir Bazar area early Saturday.
Lalmonirhat Sadar police station OC Mahfuz Alam said the girl’s private tutor Shahin Alam raped the seventh-grade girl around two and half months back.
Victim’s father filed a case against four, including the private tutor, with the police station on Wednesday and police arrested Shahin that night. He was sent to jail following court order on Thursday.
He also lodged a complaint saying the Sadar police Sub-Inspector (SI) Mainul Islam had forced his family to arrange the marriage between their daughter and rapist Shahin Alam.
Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Rashidul Hoque said: “SI Mainul Islam of Sadar Police Station was transferred to the Hatibandha Police Circle following the allegation against him. If he is found guilty in the investigation report, necessary action will be taken against him.”
The girl’s father said that his daughter underwent an abortion at a local clinic on July 25. Later, he filed a complaint with the police on August 11 and the girl was forced to marry the rapist on August 23.
