Like many other teenagers anywhere, an 18-year-old HSC examinee used a mobile phone and loved to chat with her friends.
But her in-laws did not like it. The girl, Marufa Begum, daughter of late Manik Mia from Satpakia village in Jhalakathi, was reportedly tortured to death on Monday night.
According to locals, Marufa was married to Suman, a Saudi expatriate and son of Sultan Hawlader, four years ago. She was a class VIII student at that time.
After their marriage, Marufa had been living at her in-law’s house from where she used to attend Nalchhati College. She was an HSC examinee this year and took part in the exams.
Her husband and other members falsely blamed her for extramarital affairs as she had possessed a mobile phone and used to torture her.
“She tried to commit suicide several times as she could not bear the torture,” her mother Lucky Begum said Tuesday.
Marufa had been tortured severely on Monday night and at one stage was strangled to death, she added.
Later, they took the body to Jhalakathi Sadar Hospital and left the scene immediately.
Dr Zobair Rahman of the hospital said that they would conduct an autopsy on the body to determine the cause of her death.
Tazul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police, said that they would take action after an investigation.
