At least five people, including a child, have died from dengue in Dhaka, Jessore, Barisal, and Dhaka since Tuesday night.
In Dhaka, a two and half-year-old Khadija Akhtar died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) yesterday evening.
Khadija was the daughter of Ismail, a resident of Dhaka’s Dhania hailing from Munshiganj.
She was admitted to the Mugda General Hospital on Saturday with high fever and was diagnosed with dengue. Later, she was transferred to DMCH when her condition deteriorated.
In Jessore, two women died of dengue in Manirampur upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Jahida Begum, 44, of Hanuya village; and, Jahanara Begum, 35, of Manshimnagar village of the upazila. Both were hospitalized with dengue on September 9.
Dr Arif Ahmed, medical officer of Jessore General Hospital, said they advised Jahida’s relatives to shift her to Dhaka as her condition deteriorated. But they failed to do so as her condition became critical. She died around 6:25am.
Meanwhile, Dr Abdur Rahim, supervisor of the hospital, said Jahanara died around 4am.
Six people have so far died of dengue in the district since January, Dr Rahim said.
In Barisal, a schoolboy died of dengue at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital yesterday afternoon, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Jihad, 14, a Class-VIII student and son of Babul Hawaladar of Laxmipur in Muladi upazila.
Asit Bhusan Das, duty doctor at the medicine unit-4, said Jihad was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday morning. He died while undergoing treatment around 1:30pm.
In Khulna, a woman, diagnosed with mosquito-borne disease dengue, died at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) on Tuesday night.
The deceased, Rahima Begum, 50, hailed from Azrail village in Tala upazila of Satkhira.
Dr Sailendranath Biswas, resident medical officer of KMCH, said Rahima was hospitalized on Monday with dengue. She died around 11:30pm on Tuesday.
So far, 11 people have died of dengue in the district.
Dengue Menace
The Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in a press release issued yesterday, said the number of patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals in the country was 3,165.
A total of 60 dengue patients have died across Bangladesh from January 1 till 8am yesterday, according to DGHS data. However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be at 148, so far.
