A probe committee headed by a joint secretary from the Ministry of Industries is scheduled to visit the Ziri Subedar Ship-Breaking yard on Wednesday.
Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Milton Roy confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.
Earlier on Saturday, two workers were killed and several others injured in an accident at Ziri Subedar Ship-Breaking Yard at Baro Awlia of the Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong.
Meanwhile, a team from Department of Environment (DoE) visited the ship-breaking yard and submitted a report to the DoE director.
DoE Inspector Harunur Rashid Pathan, while speaking to Dhaka Tribune, said, they had visited the yard on Sunday and found that the yard had no workplace safety measures.
“A show-cause notice was served to the errant ship-breaking yard authority,” the DoE inspector said.
The yard was shut down after accident.
Milton said they shut down the ship-breaking yard on Sunday as per the official order from the Industries Ministry.
According to the office order, the Industries minister, as per Ship-Breaking and Recycling Act-2011, ordered the dismantling of scrap ships by engaging trained workers without causing any harm to the environment.
“Accidents are taking place, as the instructions given by the Industries Ministry are hardly followed. This is resulting in a negative perception about the ship-recycling industry at home and abroad.
“The operational activities of the ship-breaking yard have been suspended as per Section 45 of Ship-Breaking and Recycling Act-2011,” the order mentioned.
At least 15 ship-breakers had lost their lives on the job in the last eight months.
On July 31 this year, three workers died after inhaling toxic fumes from a gas leak while dismantling an oil tank at a ship-breaking yard at Sitakunda.
