An Awami League activist has been killed, and nine others injured, in an intra-party clash at Kalai upazila in Joypurhat.

The deceased is Shamsuddin, 59, a resident of Kushumshara village.

The clash took place in the village Friday night.

Kalai police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) (investigation) Abdul Malek said: "Shamsuddin died at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital in Bogra around 10:30am on Saturday, while undergoing treatment."

He said supporters of two local Awami League leaders - Minfuzur Rahman Milon and Shawkat Habib Logic - locked horns over the fencing around a ground of Kushumshara Government Primary School.

Milon is the organizing secretary of Joypurhat district unit of Awami League and also the chairman of Kalai Upazila Parishad, while Shawkat is a member of the party's district unit and the chairman of Matrai Union Parishad.

At least 10 people, including Shamsuddin, a follower of Shawkat, got injured in the clash.

Along with three other injured, Shamsuddin was admitted to Joypurhat Modern General Hospital.

As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital early Saturday, the police official said.

A case was lodged on Saturday morning, said OC Abdul Latif Khan of Kalai police station.
