Bangladesh Chhattra League (BCL) men have destroyed the name plaque of Shahid Zia Auditorium at Moulvibazar government College.
The name plaque sign was meant for memorializing BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
On Thursday, Moulzibazar district Chattra League led the act of vandalism and replaced the existing name plaque with a new one, "Moulvibazar Government College Auditorium."
Soon after the incident, BCL activists and supporters brought out a victory rally. During the demonstration, they expressed their determination and chanted slogans in favour of the ruling party. They also vowed that Moulvibazar would become a base for Bangladesh Chattra League.
During the violent actions, district Chattra League President Amirul Hossain Choudhury Amin and General Secretary Mahbub Alam, among others, were present at the scene.
GS Mahbub said students would never accept an auditorium in an educational institution which is being named after an individual. Against this back drop, BCL men along with general student bodies have torn apart the name plaque.
When asked, Moulvibazar Government College Principal Dr Mohammad Fazlul Ali said he did not know as who were responsible for destroying the name plaque.
The college administration is aware of the incident, and necessary steps will be taken to investigate the matter, he said.
Meanwhile, the district BNP unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Dal has strongly condemned the incident involving the actions that destroyed the name plaque.
On Thursday evening, Moulvibazar district BNP President M Nasser Rahman and Secretary General Mizanur Rahman made the condemnation public through a written statement.
It is mentioned in the statement, that, a group of Chattra League men being encouraged by local Awami League leaders have desecrated Shahid Zia by destroying the name plaque of the Shahid Zia Auditorium at Moulvibazar Government College.
District BNP leaders and representatives have urged the college authorities to file criminal cases against those behind this act of violence.
