40,000 people attend mezban in Tungipara

Beef and rice among others were on the menu for Muslims while chicken along with other dishes were served to other communities

As many as 40,000 people of different religions have attended the mezban, a traditional feast, at Tungipara upazila in Gopalganj on the occasion of the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury Foundation, and Chittagong city unit Awami League arranged the feast at the ground of Government Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University College and Baladanga SM Musa High School on Thursday. 

Former Awami League leader Mohiuddin Chowdhury, also the former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation, started arranging the feast on every August 15 at Tungipara, the birthplace of Bangabandhu, since 1984.

The foundation secretary, Borhanul Hasan Chowdhury, younger son of Mohiuddin, said they arranged meals for 30,000 Muslims at the college ground, while 10,000 people of other religions at the school ground.

Beef and rice among others were on the menu for Muslims while chicken along with other dishes were served to other communities, he said.

A number of 500 leaders, and activists of the party reached Tungipara early Thursday to make the program a success, Borhanul Hasan added.

On Thursday morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina came to Tungipara from Dhaka to pay homage to Bangabandhu at his grave. Mohiuddin Chowdhury Foundation along with leaders, and activists of Chittagong unit Awami League also paid homage to the great leader.

After doa and milad, the feast was inaugurated by Hasina Mohiuddin, State Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, and Awami League’s Tungipara Upazila unit acting president Md Ilias Hossain, its General Secretary Sheikh Abul Bashar Khayer, and Tungipara municipality Mayor Sheikh Ahmed Hossain Mirza.
