Sylhet Murari Chand (MC) College authorities declared closure of its hostel for an indefinite period, dreading clashes between two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists after their heated interactions early on Tuesday.
Professor Nitai Chandra Chanda, principal of the college signed a notice in the morning that ordered students to vacate their dorms by the afternoon and additional police forces were deployed on the college premises.
Sources said there is a dispute going on between the rival groups for a long time to establish supremacy at the hostel. Recently, the dispute led both groups to demonstrate arms rally and also to lock in chase and counter chase.
The students have vacated their hostel as per the order, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Jedan Al Musa of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
On July 13, 2017, BCL activists vandalized 39 rooms in a clash fueled by the race of establishing supremacy.
On July 8, 2012, around 42 rooms were burnt down, in a clash between BCL activists and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir due to the same reason.
