Suspected drugs, arms trader killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’

RAB also found firearms, ammunition and 2,500 yaba pills from spot

A suspected drugs and arms trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Pubail of Gazipur city.

The incident occurred near Purbasha Company field on Talutia area around 2am on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Nazrul Islam alias Nazu, 30, who hailed from Tongi.

Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, RAB 1 Assistant Superintendent of police (ASP) Kamruzzaman said a RAB official named Prabir Sarkar was also injured in the incident. He has been provided treatment.

He said: “Acting on a tip-off that an arms and drugs trader was selling drugs in the Talutia area, a RAB patrol team conducted a drive there.”

Realizing the presence of the elite force, Nazrul and his accomplices opened fire at the RAB team, forcing them to strike back in self-defence and triggering a gunfight, which left Nazrul dead in the process, the RAB official said.

RAB officials took him to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead.

Nazrul was accused in 12 cases on charges of selling arms and drugs, ASP Kamruzzaman said.

RAB also found three shotguns, a pistol, one magazine, a bullet and 2,500 yaba pills from spot.
