Water transport between Teknaf and St Martin's Island has remained suspended for two days due to bad weather in the Bay of Bengal. People of the island are suffering.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Robiul Hasan said water vessel services on the route have been suspended since Sunday due to rough seas.
The traffic suspension will be lifted once the weather gets better, he added.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department, in a bulletin on Monday, said well defined low pressure prevails in the Bay and asked the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra to hoist local cautionary signal number three.
More than 50 island residents visiting the mainland are stranded in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar due to the disruption in water transport services. Stranded, they have taken shelter with relatives or in hotels.
St Martin's island Union Parishad Chairman Nur Ahmad said island residents are in trouble now as they cannot go to the mainland for essentials or return from there.
