A total of 43 containers of a cargo ship fell into the Bay of Bengal near Hatiya channel due to bad weather.

According to Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), the cargo ship MV KSL Gladiator laden with 83 containers was heading towards Pangaon in Keraniganj from Chittagong port.

The cargo vessel owned by Karim Shipping Lines transports container on the Chittagong-Pangaon route.

The accident took place around 8:25am on Sunday when the ship was crossing Hatiya channel in Noakhali.

It could not be immediately known what types of goods the vessel was carrying.

Mohammad Selim, deputy director of Chittagong BIWTA, said the containers fell into the sea due to strong currents.

"We heard that 43 containers went overboard, and they were seen floating towards Bhasan char. The ship’s authorities have been asked to monitor the movement of the containers. We are also keeping an eye on it," the official added, noting that the accident did not disrupt regular vessel movement on the channel.
