Tanzina Akhter, a 20-year-old female nurse in Thakurgaon, has been hacked to death by her nephew for protesting against sexual harassment.
She succumbed to her injuries at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) on Thursday after battling for her life for seven days, following an attack last week. She died at 8:00am while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of RMCH.
Tanzina sustained severe injuries after her nephew, Jibon, intercepted her—on June 20 while on her way to work—and hacked her indiscriminately. Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the spot, caught Jibon and handed him over to police.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Tanzina's father, Hamid Ali, said: "Jibon would harass many young girls in the area. When these girls complained about his activities to Tanzina, she rebuked him. Jibon killed her as revenge for that incident."
Thakurgaon police station OC Ashikur Rahman confirmed that five suspects, including Jibon, had been accused of the crime, and the remaining four assailants would be apprehended soon.
Prior to her death, Tanzina was serving as a nurse at the Grameen Eye Hospital of the district town.
