Suspected drug trader killed in Thakurgaon ‘gunfight’

Sharp weapon, contraband drugs recovered

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in Pirganj upazila of Thakugaon.

The deceased identified as Monirul Islam Babul, son of late Maidul Islam was from the Birganj Upazilla of the Dinajpur district. 

The reported gun battle took place in an open field near the Bangabandhu market area at Fakirganj around 2am on Wednesday, said Dinajpur-42 BGB Commander Lt Col Gazi Nahiduzzaman. 

Members of the law enforcement agency apprehended suspected drug trader Monirul Islam Babul and recovered 112 bottles of Phensedyl from the Fakirganj boarder area on Tuesday night, according to the BGB Commander. 

Police took suspect Babul to an operation near the Bangabandhu Market around 2am on Wednesday following information given by him over a possible drug trade. 

Upon realizing the presence of police, Babul’s associate drug traders, lurking there, opened fired at them; in retaliation BGB fired back.  At one point, Babul was injured by a bullet and died on the way to hospital.

His body has been sent to Thakurgaon for autopsy, according to a statement by the Pirganj Police station.
